What is a hotspot and how to find it
Un Hotspot is an Internet access point that allows users to connect to it, using the wireless connection of their devices. These hotspots can be divided into two macro categories: those public and those private. The difference between the two is basically based on whether their access is guaranteed to anyone or only to specific users.
For example, a hotspot installed in a square in your city can be considered public, regardless of whether or not a password is required to connect. On the other hand, a hotspot provisionally created via your smartphone is generally to be considered as private, as it is often used to provide Internet access to other devices in possession or to friends.
Having made this essential distinction, I inform you that there are several applications for smartphones and tablets that have the purpose of listing public hotspots present in the world. An example are Wifimap, available on the Android Play Store and the iOS App Store, or WifiMapper, also downloadable on Android and iOS.
In addition to these solutions, there are several web services that collect information on hotspots distributed on the national and international territory, with the possibility of also viewing any access code to connect to the network. An example are the platforms created by FON or by Wiman, which can be reached by connecting to their respective official websites. If you want to learn more about this topic, I suggest you read my guide on how to find a hotspot.
When you create a private hotspot with your mobile device, it relies on the data network of the SIM. Even with hotspots created on computers, the same principle can apply if Internet sticks with data SIM cards are used. For this reason, remember to check the traffic thresholds consumed from time to time, to avoid additional costs.
In addition, some telephony operators may foresee surcharges in the use of the tethering (although this is usually not the case). In this case, I recommend that you contact a telephone operator via Customer Service, to find out if you will have to face additional costs. In this regard, I suggest you read some of my guides, where I explain how to get in touch with some large telephone companies such as TIM, Vodafone, Wind and Tre.
