How to use iPhone as a modem

Turn on the Personal Hotspot feature on the iPhone

First di activate the Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone, you need to make sure your cellular data is set up correctly. Then open the app Settings of iOS by pressing the gray icon depicting the gears which is located on the home screen, select the item Mobile phone from the screen that opens and check that the option Cellular data is set to ON. Then tap on the item Cellular data options, presses on the voice Voice and data and then decide whether to browse the 3G o 4G (based on the tariff plan active on your SIM and the available coverage).

Now you are finally ready to use your iPhone as a modem. To proceed, go to the screen Settings> Personal Hotspot and move up ON the option toggle Personal hotspot found in the screen that opens. If you want to change the Wi-Fi password for the network generated by your iPhone, tap on the appropriate item (Wi-Fi Password) and type the wireless key you intend to use in the form that is proposed to you (which will be the one with which you can connect the other devices to the iPhone network).

If you are using an iPhone updated to iOS 11 or later, you can enable the feature Personal hotspot directly from Control Center. To proceed, first invoke the Control Center iOS (on iPhone 8/8 Plus and earlier you need to swipe from bottom to top; on iPhone X and later you need to swipe down from the top right corner of the screen) and then tap the button Mobile phone (the icon ofAntenna), so as to activate the data connection in 3G / 4G.

After activating the data connection using the appropriate toogle, make a long press (or more firmly, if the display of your iPhone supports 3D Touch technology) on the box of the Control Center dedicated to connectivity (the one located in the upper corner on the left) and then tap the button Personal hotspot: the button in question will turn green, demonstrating that the operation was successful.

If your carrier applies surcharges to tethering, you can jailbreak the iPhone and install the TetherMe tweak from Cydia ($ 4,99), which settles in Settings of iOS and allows you to bypass the restrictions of operators who apply surcharges to tethering (currently none of the main In your lenguagen operators) by activating the option Override data source.
After enabling the Personal Hotspot function on the iPhone, all you have to do is connect your devices to the network you have generated: in the following chapter I will explain how to do this.

Connect the devices to the iPhone network

Connect other devices to the network generated by the iPhone it's really that simple. All you have to do is select the network [name ]'s iPhone from your computer or any other device you want to connect to the iPhone network and type the Password that you set during the configuration phase on your "iPhone by". Here is in detail how to proceed on the various platforms.

  • Su Windows just click on the icon of network placed next to the system clock, select the wireless network of the iPhone, press the button Connect and enter the Password of the network.
  • Su MacOS you have to click on the icon of WIFI network located next to the system clock (top right), select the Wi-Fi network generated by the iPhone from the menu that opens and enter the Password of the network.
  • On devices Android you need to go to the menu of Settings, select the icon Wi-Fi, choose the iPhone network from the screen that opens and enter the Password of the network.
  • Su iOS you have to go to the menu Settings> Wi-Fi, select the iPhone network from the screen that opens and enter the relevant one Password.

Note: all the latest Mac and iPad models allow you to use the iPhone as a modem without activating the appropriate function in the phone settings. It is sufficient that the smartphone is within range of one of these two devices and the hotspot automatically appears in the list of available connections. The compatibility of this function is ensured on all Macs after 2012 and updated to OS X Yosemite or above and on all iPhones and iPads equipped with iOS 8.1 or above. To take advantage of this action, I remind you that compatible Apple devices must be in the vicinity of the iPhone you want to use as a modem and must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections active.

Once a device is connected to the Wi-Fi network generated by your iPhone's data connection, a blue stripe on which the wording will be present Personal Hotspot: [N] connections. Pigiandoci above you can go directly to the system settings relating to the management of the Personal Hotspot function.

As inconvenient as it may be, I also point out that it is possible to use the iPhone as a modem also via USB o Bluetooth (instead of via Wi-Fi connection). In the first case, you need to connect the iPhone to the computer via USB cable and choose the iPhone from the list of available network services. In the second, however, you have to pair the iPhone to the computer using the Bluetooth settings of the PC, after which it is necessary to type on the iPhone the security code displayed on the PC and connect it to the PC. Again, these are two pretty awkward options - it's much easier to generate a wireless network and use that.

I also remind you that if you want to prevent your computer from automatically connecting to the iPhone hotspot (when this is in operation), before connecting to the "iPhone by phone" network for the first time, you must remove the check mark from the item relating to password storage. It's too late? Have you already allowed your PC to store the iPhone hotspot password? Here's how to fix it.

  • It was used Windowsclick on your button Home (l'icona della bandierina collocata nell'angolo in basso a sinistra dello schermo), close Panel of control in the menu that opens and access the classic control panel by selecting the first search result, then go to Network and Internet> network and sharing center. In the window that opens, click on the entry Manage wireless networks located in the left sidebar, select the connection [name ]'s iPhone and presses the button Remove. In this way the PC will "forget" the connection.
  • If you have one Mac, open the application Portachiavi access (which should be in the Other of Launchpad), select the items System e Password From the left sidebar, right click on the network name [name ]'s iPhone and choose the item Delete give the menu to compare.

Alternatively, you can simply change the hotspot password on iPhone by going to Settings> Personal Hotspot> Wi-Fi Password and you will make it impossible to automatically connect to all the devices that had previously memorized its wireless key.

Disable Personal Hotspot on iPhone

To deactivate the hotspot function of the iPhone and disconnect all the devices connected to its wireless network in one go, just go back to the menu Settings> Cellular> Personal Hotspot phone and move on OFF the lever located at the option Personal hotspot.

If you want you can speed up the operation by tapping on the blue stripe located at the top of the screen and, once in the iOS settings, move to OFF the switch lever located near the wording Personal hotspot.

If your iPhone is updated to iOS 11 or later, you can also proceed from Control Center. All you have to do is recall the latter (on iPhone 8 / 8Plus just swipe from bottom to top; while on iPhone X and later just swipe down from the top right corner) and then press the button Mobile phone (the icon ofAntenna white on a green background) to interrupt both the data connection and network sharing or on the button Personal hotspot (l'icona della chain white on a green background), so as to disable only the function in question.
