How to install Plex on Smart TV

For your information, Plex is an application designed for the use of multimedia content on multiple devices; it is made up of two fundamental components: a server program, which must be installed and configured on the device that contains the media library to be shared (for example a computer or NAS), and aclient app, which must be installed (and appropriately configured) on transmission devices (such as smartphones, tablets or Smart TVs) in order to play the contents from the server.

Plex is compatible with most Smart TV operating systems (eg. Samsung, LG and appliances equipped with Android TV): for a complete list, I invite you to consult the appropriate page available on the software website.

As I have already mentioned in the introductory lines of this guide, in order to use Plex from the TV, it is essential that the device has been previously connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi: if you do not know how to do it, I invite you to read the my guide on how to connect the TV to the Internet, in which I was able to provide you with all the relevant information.

Either way, install the Plex client on Smart TV is relatively simple: after connecting the TV to the Internet, turn it on, press the button to enter the section Smart on the TV on the remote control and go to the app download section, or, alternatively, select the icon Store present on the home screen.

Once this is done, look for the Plex using the search bar (or the button in the shape of a magnifying glass), usually present in the sections Video o Entertainment. When you have found it, press on its icon and then on the button Install / Add to start the app installation procedure, which will later be available in the Smart section of the TV. If you need help with the app installation procedure, I invite you to refer to my guide on how to install apps on Smart TVs, in which I have provided you with information that is valid for most Smart TVs on the market, or , if you have a Samsung, LG or Philips branded TV, consult my thematic guides.

After installing the app on the TV, do not open it right away, as it is essential to install and configure the Plex server in order to continue with the configuration: in a few moments I will explain how.

Please note: if your TV is not Smart, you can get compatibility with Plex by configuring theclient app (practically the same on all devices with which it is compatible) on a smartphone or tablet, and then transmit the contents from the latter to the TV via devices such as Chromecast, Apple TV or one of the various Android TV Boxes available on the market.

How Plex Works on Smart TVs

Now that you have downloaded the Plex client on the TV at your disposal, it's time to get to the heart of this guide and show you, in practice, how to use Plex on Smart TV: below I will explain how to configure the server on the device that contains the files you want to share and, subsequently, how to pair the client with it and use it to the fullest.
